Museum of Riverside’s grand revival: A glimpse into the past with modern twists

Riverside City, California – The Riverside City Council recently agreed to refurbish and enlarge the Museum of Riverside located in the city center.

The museum, situated at 3580 Mission Inn Ave., has been shut since September 2017. The renovation will include the 1912 design style facing Mission Inn Avenue and add a two-floor extension at the back.

Plans include a larger Nature Lab with both inside and outside areas, a specialized classroom, and a rooftop terrace.

Robyn G. Peterson, the museum’s director, introduced the redesign plan to the council. Before the council’s unanimous approval, comments were made by the public and the museum’s board members.

“The new Museum of Riverside blends old and new, allowing us to learn about our past in an inviting and modern setting,” Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson said in the statement.  “Riverside residents, students and visitors will now have a chance to experience our city’s history with engaging exhibits and meaningful storytelling.”

The museum is expected to reopen in 2026.
